Sterne und Weltraum sind für viele Menschen auch heute noch ein Symbol für die Unendlichkeit der Natur und die Beschränktheit der menschlichen Vorstellung und des menschlichen Geistes. Die traditionsreiche Buchreihe des "Bergmann-Schäfer" will dem Leser zeigen, dass auch bei den Sternen und im Weltall nicht nur theoretische sondern auch ganz praktische, eher experimentelle physikalische Themen eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die strenge Unterteilung des Buches (angelehnt an andere Bänden der Bergmann-Schäfer-Reihe) in einzelne Kapitel, die von ausgewählten Autoren verfasst sind, erinnert eher an eine wissenschaftliche Monographie als an ein Lehrbuch. Diese Aufteilung schadet aber der Vermittlung von Wissen keineswegs. Um aus diesem Band des "Bergmann Schäfer" wirklich Nutzen und neues Wissen ziehen zu können, ist ein grundlegendes, allgemein-physikalisches Verständnis allein nicht ausreichend. Zumindest die wichtigsten physikalischen Formeln und Begriffe sollten vom Leser vor (!) der Lektüre dieser Bände beherrscht werden. Zusätzlich zum profunden Fachwissen, das in den einzelnen Bänden vermittelt wird, versorgen die Autoren ihre Leser nicht nur mit weiterführenden Literaturstellen, sondern auch mit Internetseiten, auf denen aktuelle Daten und neue Entwicklungen bzw. Erkenntnisse bereitgestellt werden. Dies ist heute, kurz nach dem dieser Band neu überarbeitet aufgelegt wurde, sicher sehr hilfreich, besonders für einzelne Themengebiete, wie aktuelle Beobachtungsergebnisse, mit vielen aktuellen Veränderungen. Es bleibt aber die Frage, wie lange diese Links in der schnelllebigen Internetzeit wirklich aktuell und erreichbar sind. Die Erfahrung zeigt nämlich, dass man sich Werke wie das Bergmann-Schäfer "Lehrbuch der Experimentalphysik" nur einmal im Leben kauft und auch in öffentlichen Bibliotheken derartige Buchreihen sehr viele Jahre genutzt werden, auch wenn bereits neue Auflagen erschienen sind. Der zweite himmlische Band "Sterne und Weltraum" der Reihe "Lehrbuch der Experimentalphysik" von W. Raith deckt den ganzen Bereich der Astronomie ab, außer den bereits in Band 7 "Erde und Planeten" besprochenen Themen. Neben den elementarsten Grundlagen, wie astronomische Koordinatensysteme, Zeitmessungen u. ä., beschränkt sich das Buch nicht nur auf die Abhandlung der wissenschaftlichen Kernthemen, wie Sterne, Sternentwicklung und Galaxien, sondern auch mit den eher "handwerklichen" Fragen der Himmelsbeobachtung. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Generationen stehen uns heute durch die Raumfahrt nicht nur die erdgebundenen Himmelsbeobachtungsmöglichkeiten zur Verfügung sondern auch Satelliten, das Hubble-Space-Telescope u. ä.. Diese im Weltraum stationierten Beobachtungsinstrumente liefern uns Daten, die, wenn sie überhaupt von der Erde aus messbar wären, nur in viel schlechterer Qualität zur Verfügung stünden. Somit sind sie für den Zuwachs an Wissen heute unverzichtbar. Abgerundet wird der Band durch eine Einführung in eines der spannendsten Gebiete, mit denen sich heute Astronomen und Astronomieinteressierte beschäftigen können: die Kosmologie. Dieser Band ist, ebenso wie der erste astronomische Band, nicht für den völlig unbedarften Einsteiger gedacht. Er richten sich vielmehr an den informierten, vorgebildeten Leser, der die einzelnen Themengebiete vertiefen möchte, um dann auch für eine Spezialisierung und evtl. auch Originalliteratur gerüstet zu sein. Auf Grund der breiten und umfassenden Abdeckung nahezu aller für die Astronomie wirklich relevanten Themenbereiche sollten beide Bände in keiner astronomischen Bibliothek fehlen, und sie sind auch dem wirklich astronomisch interessierten Leser privat zu empfehlen.
